Snails might not be the fastest creatures, but they’re some of the most interesting. Found in gardens, forests, oceans, and even deserts, snails are a type of mollusk with a soft body and a coiled shell for protection. They use a muscular “foot” to move slowly and leave behind a trail of slime that helps reduce friction and prevent injury.
One of the most unique things about snails is their ability to carry their home on their back. Their spiral shell grows with them and serves as both armor and shelter. Some snails can even seal themselves inside during dry periods to conserve moisture—a survival trick called aestivation.
In many cultures, snails are a delicacy, while in nature, they play a key role in the ecosystem by breaking down decaying plants and enriching the soil. Their fascinating biology, including the ability of some species to regenerate parts of their body, continues to amaze scientists.
Snails may move slowly, but they live surprisingly complex and important lives in the natural world.
